Transit companies in Tucson are joining forces to recruit drivers at a transit job fair July 24.

From golf cart shuttles to 40-foot buses, driver applicants are invited to find their fit at a regional transit job fair. The joint event includes driving opportunities with the University of Arizona Parking & Transportation Services, the Tucson Unified School District, Sun Shuttle, and the Sun Tran family of services. The pandemic affected many frontline workers, including transit drivers. Each organization participating in the job fair is seeking new hires to meet renewed ridership demand as our community recovers and as we approach the start of school.

“Everything we do is graded on the performance of our front line and our behind the scenes support. We heavily invest resources in employee recruitment and training because good employees are an asset,” said Danny Palmer, an Operations Manager with National Express LLC, which operates Sun Shuttle.

Tucson’s First 100% Electric Bus

Tucson is pleased to announce it’s first, 100% electric bus. This zero-emission electric bus improves air quality in the community and enhances service to riders. Watch the video to learn about the environmental and socioeconomic benefits of an electric fleet.

This is the first electric bus to be deployed in Sun Tran’s fleet, and will be leased for the next year. Sun Tran has purchased and expects to receive five additional electric buses later this year, paid for with funding awarded by the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Low-No Emission Grant program.

Sun Tran and the City of Tucson recognize the advantages of incorporating an all-electric bus program, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering maintenance costs, and offering quality service to passengers.

Mayor Regina Romero has been a proponent of electrifying the City of Tucson vehicles. “Electric buses help improve our community’s air quality, and avoid associated healthcare expenses,” said Romero. “I encourage our community to try out our new electric bus. This is one step to making our community more climate-resilient, including electrifying our city’s vehicles and transit fleet.”

Since 2006, 100 percent of Sun Tran’s fleet is powered by clean fuel technology. Sun Tran’s fleet currently runs on biodiesel, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and hybrid-electric power sources. “Sun Tran is invested in creating an innovative and smart transportation system,” said Steve Spade, Sun Tran General Manager. “Our passengers can be confident they are contributing to a more sustainable community and cleaner air.

Face Coverings Required on Transit Vehicles

TUCSON, Ariz. – On Monday January 4, Mayor and Council members approved new safety measures for transit. All passengers on Sun Tran, Sun Van and Sun Link will be required to wear a mask, shield or face covering. The use of the face coverings must comply with CDC guidelines and the City Ordinance.

By Proclamation of Mayor Regina Romero, all passengers are required to use a face covering or mask on all transit vehicles and at transit centers. Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Van and Sun Shuttle have the right to refuse a ride to passengers not wearing a mask or shield.

“Our riders rely on transit services daily, it’s important for riders to protect themselves and others from COVID-19,” said Sun Tran General Manager, Steve Spade. “We ask all riders to continue to do your part to make transit safe for everyone.”

Sun Tran has a limited supply of masks and shields at the Ronstadt and Laos Transit Centers. Customer Service Representatives are available in the information booths on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Face coverings must fit snuggly over the mouth and nose. Children 5 years old and younger are exempt.

Transit fares currently remain free to reduce direct contact between passengers and drivers. Drivers are provided with masks, gloves, and disinfectant spray to keep their work area clean throughout the day. The Ordinance also requires Sun Tran and Sun Van Operators to wear a mask, shield or face covering.

In addition to wearing face coverings, Passengers should also continue to practice social distancing whenever possible from other passengers, stand behind the double yellow line after boarding and to stay home if sick. See how full your bus is before you board or plan your trip with the new Sun Tran app, available now on iOS and Android devices.
