Transit Policy and Fares Feedback Open House Events

Sun Tran staff speaks with members of the public at transit input meetings.

The public is invited to join Sun Tran staff for a conversation about Title VI policies that affect major service changes, fare changes, disparate impact and disproportionate burden. Representatives from Sun Tran will be available at seven in-person and one virtual open house events. Spanish and English-speaking staff will provide information, answer questions and accept feedback on the Title VI policies and other transit-related topics. Attendees will also be invited to fill out a survey about transit fares.

Sun Tran holds Title VI meetings every 3 years. Title VI refers to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, stating no person in the United States shall, on the grounds of race, color or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

If members of the public cannot make a meeting and have a comment, they may call Sun Tran Customer Service at (520) 792-9222 or email: suntraninfo@tucsonaz.gov. Comments regarding transit policies will be accepted through July 29, 2022. Fares feedback is still being accepted.

Tech Upgrades Boost Independence for Bus Riders Using a Mobility Device

Riders using mobility devices can now enjoy an enhanced experience on Sun Tran buses. Quantum Automatic Securement Stations are currently available in 79 buses, or 40 percent of the active fleet. These new stations replace straps that were previously used to secure mobility devices. Now all it takes is the push of a button and a snap of the seat belt for riders to self-secure their wheelchair, scooter or other mobility device.

“This technology promotes independence among our riders with mobility devices who can now be in control of securing themselves,” said Jeff Rock, Sun Tran Assistant General Manager. “It also benefits other riders because it shortens the boarding times at bus stops, allowing all riders to get where they need to go quickly and efficiently.”

Riders using the technology are encouraged to provide feedback about their experience to help Sun Tran measure the impact of this upgrade. Researchers from the University of Arizona created a survey that riders can take online now through the end of September. The survey is offered in both English and Spanish and can be accessed at: SunTran.com/Quantum. A QR code with a direct link to the survey is available onboard buses.

The technology upgrade was set in motion by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration awarded in 2021. Along with a fare analysis study and the implementation of contactless solutions onboard buses, Sun Tran used part of the $600,000 grant to pay for 41 securement stations.

“Initially, we looked at the Quantum devices as a way to allow for social distancing at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rock. “Now we are discovering bonus benefits and the survey could uncover even more ways this technology is making life easier for members of our community.”

The Quantum stations will come standard in all new buses Sun Tran acquires. Traditional strap securement areas remain available.

We See You: Sun Tran Offers Safety to Tucsonans Experiencing Human Trafficking

Sun Tran is taking a stand against human trafficking with the implementation of the #WeSeeYou awareness campaign. This initiative offers help to potential victims and educates the public on ways to recognize and report human trafficking in Tucson.

“I think the way you stop human trafficking is to see it, recognize it, and have people aware of what is going on,” said Sun Tran General Manager Steve Spade. “Sometimes trafficking happens right under our noses. If we’re not trained to be observant, then we have no idea and we can’t help.”

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded Sun Tran $221,100 in grant funds in 2020 for public safety initiatives, including human trafficking awareness and training opportunities. Some of the funds were used to train bus drivers on how to identify human trafficking and the proper reporting protocols.

“Because of the grant there are 900 more people in Tucson who know the signs of human trafficking,” said Spade. “If our employees spot one of these signs, they now have a chance of reporting it before it becomes too late.”

All of Sun Tran’s buses feature a sticker notifying the public of the campaign and include the National Human Trafficking Hotline number. The decals mark the vehicles as a haven for anyone experiencing trafficking.

“At Sun Tran, we are doing our part to make sure human trafficking doesn’t happen in Tucson,” said Spade.

The public can join these efforts by learning how to recognize the signs of human trafficking and ways to report the crime. Sun Tran has developed educational videos, informational brochures and a resource web page at SunTran.com. The public can also notify bus drivers about suspicious behavior, who can discreetly call for help.

“If somebody in our community is experiencing a problem, whether it’s a threat or human trafficking, we want them to know that they can go to a bus for help,” said Spade. “Tell a driver or grab one of our supervisors and we’ll make sure that you get to safety.”

Sun Shuttle Launches Marana/Avra Valley Dial-a-Ride

Sun Shuttle Dial a Ride

Sun Shuttle is upgrading transit service in Marana/Avra Valley with a new curb-to-curb shared ride service. The Marana/Avra Valley Dial-a-Ride service launches Monday, June 13 and replaces the former Sun Shuttle Route 410. With Dial-a-Ride, anyone can book a trip to any location in the service area. The service is open to the public with no residency or other qualifications necessary.

“Curb-to-curb allows a customized public transportation experience,” said Preston McLaughlin, the senior transportation planner for Pima Association of Governments, which manages the Regional Transportation Authority. “This upgraded level of service opens up many new destination options for our riders.”

Riders have the flexibility of booking trips to popular stops established under the previous route service, or to a specific location.

The service area includes Interstate 10 from Cochise Canyon Trail to Tangerine Road, along parts of Avra Valley Road including the Marana Regional Airport, destinations west of Roadrunner Elementary School, and more.

“This service is the result of feedback from the community,” said McLaughlin. “We listened to the needs of our neighbors and are excited to launch Dial-a-Ride in the Marana/Avra Valley area.”

To use the new service, riders should make a reservation via phone or on the free Sun Shuttle Dial-a-Ride app. Riders are encouraged to schedule trips one to seven days in advance. Same-day service is available on a limited basis.

Sun Shuttle is a neighborhood transit service connecting to Sun Tran. The service is funded by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) through its voter-approved 20-year regional transportation plan and sales tax through June 2026.

Sun Shuttle provides curb-to-curb (shared ride) Dial-a-Ride service for anyone traveling in the Marana/ Avra Valley area. All rides require a reservation.

How do I use Dial-a-Ride?

  1. Make your reservation.
  2. When scheduling your trip, provide your
    name, date of travel, departure location,
    destination and desired arrival time.
  3. Please be ready at your scheduled pick-up location at least 5 minutes early. Wait where the Sun Shuttle driver can see you.
  4. When you board, verify the driver knows
    your desired drop off location.
  5. Gather your personal belongings before you exit. If you have a bike stored on the bike rack, tell the driver you need to unload your bike. Sun Shuttle is not responsible for items left on the vehicle.
  6. Each passenger is allowed up to 4 packages.

What area does Dial-a-Ride cover?

Yes, you can get picked up or dropped off at a yellow stop but you are still required to make a reservation.

Do I have to qualify to use Dial-a-Ride?

No, Dial-a-Ride is open to the public, anyone can use it, with a reservation. Residency in the service area is not required.

How far in advance do I need to book my ride?

Reservations can be made one to seven days in advance, or same day. Same day service is available on a limited first-come, first-served basis. Please allow for a pickup window of up to one hour for same day service. Please make advance reservations for time-sensitive appointments.

How do I cancel a ride?

Summer Bus Schedules

Summer bus schedules start Sunday, May 29. Minor time changes will go into effect for 12 regular Sun Tran routes and two Sun Express routes:

1, 2, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 23, 25, 26, 27, 29, 101X, 110X

Riders can view schedule changes three ways:

  • Online: Full Ride Guide
  • Pick up a ride guide at a transit center or onboard the bus
  • Contact customer service to request an emailed or mailed copy of your route schedules

Customer Service Representatives are available weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Modified Streetcar Service Saturday for Pets of Pima Parade

Streetcar Route Adjustment Map

The Sun Link Streetcar will have modified service on Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. due to road closures for the Pets of Pima Parade. During the event, there will be no streetcar service to platforms at:
• 4th Avenue/4th Street
• 4th Avenue/6th Street

Eastbound Service

A special event bus will provide service around the road closure. Riders arriving at the 4th Avenue/9th Street platform can board the special event bus to continue traveling east to Main Gate and the University of Arizona. The bus will pick up riders near the stop sign located southwest of the streetcar platform. The bus will drop off riders on University Boulevard/3rd Avenue. Riders may re-board the streetcar at the platform near Time Market and continue to their destination.

Westbound Service

Riders arriving at the University Boulevard/3rd Avenue platform can board the special event bus to continue traveling west to Downtown and the Mercado district. The buss will pick up riders on the sidewalk south of the streetcar platform. Riders can look for a bus boarding sign near Time Market. The bus will drop off riders at 4th Avenue and 9th Street. Riders may re-board the streetcar at the adjoining platform and continue to their destination.

Sun Tran Route 3 Bus Detour

Route 3 will be on a temporary detour from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. The bus will not service westbound stops on 6th Street between Euclid Avenue and 6th Avenue. Riders can board along the detour route on Euclid Avenue. The Route 3 eastbound bus will not service stops on 6th Street from 4th Avenue to Campbell Avenue. Riders can board along the detour route on Broadway Boulevard or Campbell Avenue.

Masks No Longer Required on Public Transit

Mask Update

April 19, 2022

Sun Tran has been notified that the federal mask requirement is no longer in effect for the public transit industry. As a result, Sun Tran, Sun Van, Sun Link and Sun Shuttle employees are not required to enforce mask wearing. Although masks are no longer required, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to recommend wearing a mask while onboard transit vehicles. Please respect those who choose to continue wearing masks. Passengers can request a mask at one of our transit center information booths.

Ya no se requieren cubrebocas en el transporte público

Se ha notificado a Sun Tran que el requisito federal de cubrebocas ya no está vigente para la industria del transporte público. Como resultado, los empleados de Sun Tran, Sun Van, Sun Link y Sun Shuttle no están obligados a exigir el uso de cubrebocas. Aunque ya no se requieren cubrebocas, los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades (CDC) continúan recomendando usar un cubrebocas a bordo de vehículos de tránsito.
