How To Ride

Sun Tran serves more than 2,200 bus stops across the Tucson region. Some stops feature amenities such as benches, bike lockers, and trash receptacles, and more than one-third of stops are equipped with shelters.

Before You Board

  1. Plan your trip using the Trip Planning feature on this website, downloading the Sun Tran App or by calling Customer Service at (520)792-9222.
  2. Check to sign at the stop to be sure that your bus services that stop
  3. Arrive at your stop at least five minutes early. Wait where the coach operator can see you.

  1. Please board the bus at the front door and exit through the rear door. If you have a bike stored on the bike rack, let your driver know and exit from the front door.
  2. Check the head sign above the front windshield to be sure it travels to your desired destination.
  3. Stay back from the curb and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop.

Exiting The Bus

  1. The bus or operator will announce major stops and intersections. Feel free to ask the operator to call out your destination.
  2. About one block from your desired stop, press the bell tape or pull the cord next to the window to signal you want the bus to stop.
  3. Gather all personal belongings and exit through the rear door. Sun Tran is not responsible for items left on the bus.

Before You Board

  1. Arrive at your stop at least five minutes early. Wait where the coach operator can see you.

  3. Stay back from the curb and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop.
  4. Passengers using a Flag Stop should wait a safe distance from the street and wave to the driver indicating you want a ride.

Flag Stops – Waving Down Your Bus

Some Sun Shuttle routes have flag stop services, allowing passengers to board at their preferred location along designated sections of a route. Flag stop areas are indicated on the maps with a double line.

Passengers using a Flag Stop should wait a safe distance from the street and wave to the driver to indicate you would like a ride.

Exiting The Bus

  1. About one block from your desired stop, pull the cord or press the bell tape next to the window.
  2. Gather personal belongings before you exit.
  3. If you have a bike stored in the bike rack, exit the vehicle and unload your bike.
  4. Sun Shuttle is not responsible for items left on vehicle.

Route Deviation Service – Curbside Service Up To 3/4 Mile Along Route 414

For Sun Shuttle 414, passengers can schedule a pick-up or drop-off within 3/4 mile of Sun Shuttle routes.

  • For deviated services on a Monday, requests must be scheduled prior to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Other deviated service requests must be scheduled by 6 p.m. the previous day.

To schedule route deviation service, you must make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance by calling (520) 792-9222 between the hours of 6AM-6PM on weekdays and 9AM-3PM on Saturdays.

Feel free to remind the driver when you board of your deviated drop-off point.

Dial-A-Ride Service

Sun Shuttle provides dial-a-ride service for passenger convenience in Oro Valley, the Green Valley/Sahuarita area and the area previously serviced by Handicar.

All trips require a reservation 1-7 days in advance.

Sun Shuttle does not operate on the following holidays:

Ride with Respect-Rider Rules

Ride with Respect/Code of Conduct  

Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van’s mission is to provide safe, secure, efficient, reliable customer-focused public transportation. With nearly 50,000 riders using transit each day in Tucson, we have responsibility to our community to create a pleasant experience for everyone. In order to maintain this environment, we must all do our part so that our riders and our transit employees feel safe and secure on any Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicles and/or at any transit facility.  

Policy Definition 

The “Ride with Respect” Code of Conduct is customer-focused and aimed to create the best rider experience, while discouraging disruptive, intrusive, unsafe or inappropriate behaviors on a transit vehicle or transit facility.  The Code of Conduct is enforced at all of our transit facilities, stops and vehicles. Violations of the Code of Conduct will not be tolerated and are just cause for removal from the system and can result in further penalties.  

The following is a list of behaviors and activities that are expected or prohibited on Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van property or vehicles: 

Conduct 

  1. Riders are expected to treat other passengers and bus operators with respect and courtesy and abide by the rules and regulations in the Code of Conduct. 
  1. Riders should never interfere with the transit operator’s ability to operate the vehicle safely. 
  1. Spitting, defecating, or urinating is prohibited on any Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicle or property. Entering any Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van property or vehicle with clothing containing blood, urine, feces, or vomit is also prohibited. 
  1. Littering is prohibited on any Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van property. 
  1. Sun Tran is a destination based service. Passengers may be asked to deboard at the end of the service line except in cases of extreme weather conditions.  
  1. Bringing commercial or large-size carts, recumbent bikes, handcarts or bicycle trailers on board a transit vehicle is prohibited, unless they are collapsed. Riders may bring a small, personal-use-size stroller or small cart, which must be securely held. These items may not block aisles or doorways. 
  1. Gasoline-powered bicycles, scooters, and skateboards are not allowed on the bike rack or on the transit vehicle.  
  1. Foldable carts such as shopping carts no higher than 36 inches, foldable scooters, and foldable electric scooters with a covered battery can be brought onboard a transit vehicle and may not block aisles or doorways.    
  • Strollers and collapsible wagons that can be folded and placed so they do not block the aisle are allowed on buses and streetcars. Strollers can roll aboard unfolded and then be folded for storage once on board. 
  1. Excessive bags are prohibited from the bus. Bags must be in a cart no higher than 36’ or carried by a person and cannot take up the walkway or additional seats. 
  1. Sun Van allows up to four bags or packages per rider. An Operator is not allowed to touch the bags or carry them into homes.  Riders may be refused if the individual has more than four bags or packages weigh more than 40lbs. Bags or packages must be kept clear of the walkway/aisle and cannot occupy another seat.   
  1. Roller-skating, in-line skating, and skateboarding are prohibited on all transit property. 
  1. Bicycles may not be ridden on platforms or any Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicle. Sun Tran vehicles are equipped with a 2-3 bike rack on all vehicles. On Sun Tran, bicyclists must to use the storage racks on the front of the bus. On the Sun Link, the rider may stand and hold their bike as long as the bike is not blocking the doorway.  
  1. Indecent exposure is prohibited. Tops, bottoms, and footwear are required at all times. 
  1. Stealing or willfully damaging Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van property is prohibited. 
  1. Taking up more than one seat is prohibited. Saving or “holding” seats is also prohibited. 
  1. A person may not block the entrance/exit of a streetcar, bus, or other transit vehicle. 
  1. Other forms of disorderly conduct are prohibited, including actions that prevent passengers and personnel from safely and comfortably riding/using Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van services/facilities, including destroying, defacing or drawing graffiti on Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van owned/operated property taking away from the intended use/purpose and value of the property. 
  1. No Loitering.   
  1. Panhandling on transit property including vehicles, transit centers or bus stops/platforms is strictly prohibited.  

Fares/Booking Trips/Cancellations and No-Shows 

  1. Riders must pay when fares are applicable to utilize the Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van system. Using or attempting to use the system without a valid fare is prohibited. Refusing to show valid fare/transit pass to any Sun Tran, Sun Link and Sun Van personnel, transit security or law enforcement officer upon request is prohibited and may result in removal from the system. 
  1. Riders must pay for and utilize the transit fare for which they are eligible. The misuse of fare/transit pass is prohibited. Reduced Fare passes may not be used unless the rider is in possession of applicable documentation showing eligibility for a reduced fare. 
  1. Distributing or selling a counterfeit or stolen fare/transit pass is prohibited. Fares/transit passes may not be transferred from one rider to another. 
  1. Possession of proper fare does not excuse a rider from following all rules and the code of conduct. 
  1. Passengers ages five (5) and under ride free with an accompanying adult.  
  1. If a Sun Van and Sun On Demand rider does not cancel their trip at least two hours in advance, a no show will be recorded. No-shows for reasons beyond a customer’s control or due to a Sun Van error will not be counted against the rider. 

Food, Drink, Alcohol, Tobacco and Illegal Drugs 

  1. Riders may not bring open food or beverage containers onto Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicles. Food and drinks must be kept in a sealed or resealable container and beverages must be sealed or in a spill-proof container. Eating food is strictly prohibited. This restriction does not apply to agency personnel at authorized locations or to anyone giving food or beverage to a child under the age of five. 
  1. Bringing open or unsealed alcoholic beverages onto Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van property or fleet is prohibited. Drinking alcoholic beverages anywhere on transit vehicles or property is also prohibited. Conduct consistent with alcoholic consumption may result in removal from the bus or facilities.  
  1. All forms of smoking, including tobacco, marijuana, electronic cigarettes and vaporizers is prohibited anywhere on Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicles or property. Chewing tobacco is also prohibited. There are designated areas located at the three (3) Transit Centers for smoking. 
  1. Possession, use or sales of any narcotic drug, paraphernalia or other illegal activity is prohibited on any Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van owned and operated property, and may result in removal from the system. 

Safety 

  1. Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van are destination-based services. Transit riders may not remain in vehicles after they have completed their trips. All riders must exit the transit vehicle and clear the platform area and/or transit facility including transit centers or bus stops when arriving at their destination or the end-of-line station.  
  1. Except for legitimate emergencies, entering, exiting or passing through any emergency door of any transit vehicle is prohibited. 
  1. Entering the operator’s cab or driver’s seat of any transit vehicle is prohibited. 
  1. Threat of assault or intimidation of any person is prohibited. 
  1. Hindering or disturbing the operation of a Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicle, operator or passenger is prohibited. 
  1. Fighting, taunting and/or other aggressive/disorderly behavior is prohibited. 
  1. Harassing, threatening, following and/or stalking Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van passenger(s) or personnel is prohibited. 
  1. Interfering with or avoiding properly-functioning safety or security measures including interfering with a, fare enforcement operation or standard fare inspection is prohibited. 
  1. The possession of flammable, explosive and/or hazardous materials is prohibited. Using a match, lighter and/or torch is prohibited. 
  1. Children seven or younger cannot ride alone and must be accompanied by a responsible person, which is defined as one who can directly control and supervise the child. 
  1. Entering a Sun Link platform by crossing the trackway and tactile strip from the street, or any location other than a marked crosswalk, is prohibited. 

Noise 

  1. Riders should use electronic devices in an appropriate manner that does not interfere with the quiet enjoyment of other passengers. Audio and visual devices, including radios, CD players, iPods, MP3 devices, mobile phones and other similar devices must not be audible to other passengers. Mobile phone conversations should be conducted quietly in a manner that does not disturb other passengers. 
  1. Causing sounds or behaving in a way that is unreasonably loud or highly disruptive to other’s use of Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicles or property is prohibited. Examples include, but are not limited to: being loud, abusive, indecent, profane or disruptive. 

Commercial Activity/Solicitation 

Engaging in solicitation or commercial sales of goods of any type without permission is prohibited on any Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van property throughout the Sun Tran, Sun Link and Sun Van system. Animals

  1. All animals (except service animals) must be carried inside an enclosed and secured cage or carrying case small enough to fit on a rider’s lap, and must not endanger or disturb other passengers including excessive barking. 
  1. Service animals that are trained to assist an individual with a disability are welcome on board Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van vehicles and property. Service animals must be under the control of their handlers, must not block seats or aisles and must not pose a direct threat to any passengers or employees. Service animal handlers are responsible for any damage caused by their service animals. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, Sun Tran, Sun Link, and Sun Van personnel may ask whether a passenger’s animal is a service animal and what service the passenger’s animal is trained to perform. 

Personal Care Attendant (PCA)  

  1. A Personal Care Attendant (PCA) is able to travel with the Sun Van rider if authorized by the City of Tucson’s ADA Paratransit Eligibility Office.  
  1. A companion, such as a friend or family member with the same ride origin and destination, is allowed to ride Sun Van but a reservation is required by the approved Sun Van rider. More than one companion can ride if space is available. A companion pays the same fare as the rider who booked the Sun Van trip.  

Mobility Devices

  1. Sun Tran, Sun Van, and Sun Link can transport all mobility devices regardless of size or weight as long as the vehicle lift and vehicle can physically accommodate the mobility device.  
  1. Sun Van Operators will fasten the mobility device in the securement bay. Drivers cannot operate a mobility device on or off the lift or into positions for securement.  
  1. In additional to the manual securement stations, Sun Tran offers the Quantum Wheelchair Securement Stations on most buses. This automatic securement station allows passengers the freedom to install the mobility device into the securement station, however an Operator will assist to double check securement.   

Accessibility and Reasonable Modifications

  1. Per the Americans with Disabilities Act, regional transit providers who receive federal financial assistance are committed to responding to requests for reasonable modifications of their policies, practices, or procedures. 
  1. Riders may request a modification from an operator for example a passenger with diabetes or another medical condition requests to eat or drink aboard a vehicle in order to avoid adverse health consequences.  
  1. The request should be granted, even though Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Shuttle, and Sun Van have a policy that prohibits eating or drinking while onboard the vehicle. Such as a person with diabetes whom needs to consume a small amount of juice in a closed container or a candy bar in order to maintain blood sugar level.   
  1. Additionally, a request may be submitted to Customer Service prior to an event requesting written materials be printed in a large font size or in Braille.  These are only two examples of a modification that may be requested, please consider the guidelines below when requesting a reasonable modification with as much notice as possible in advance.  

Requesting a Reasonable Modification 

  1. Individuals requesting modifications shall describe what they need in order to use the service. 
  1. Individuals requesting modifications are not required to use the term “reasonable modification” when making a request. 
  1. Whenever feasible, requests for modifications shall be made in advance, before the transportation provider is expected to provide the modified service. 
  1. When a modification is requested and it appears practicable, operators are required to decide if the modification should be provided immediately. Operators may consult with a supervisor or manager before deciding to grant or deny the request. 
  • If an individual requests a modification of sub-recipient’s and/or contractor’s policies and practices the request may be denied only on one or more of the following grounds: 
  1. Granting the request would fundamentally alter the nature of the entity’s services, programs, or activities; 
  1. Granting the request would create a direct threat to the health or safety of others; 
  1. Without the requested modification, the individual with a disability is able to fully use the entity’s services, programs, or activities for their intended purpose. 

Non-Discriminatory Service

  1. The City of Tucson, Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), Sun Tran, Sun Van and Sun Link are committed to providing non-discriminatory service. 
  1. Per the Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, “No person in the United States shall, on the grounds of race, color or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
