Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Van, Sun On Demand, Sun Express and Sun Shuttle rides continue to remain fare free at the direction of the Mayor and Council.

Sun Van makes getting around the Tucson area simple for those eligible to ride. Sun Van meets the standards set under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) to provide service for those individuals who, because of their disability, are unable to ride Sun Tran.

Paratransit Eligibility

Individuals qualify for ADA paratransit with a current eligibility letter from the City of Tucson ADA Paratransit Eligibility Office. Sun Van does not provide service based on age or social service needs.

If you do not have an ADA Eligibility letter, you must apply through the City of Tucson’s ADA Eligibility Office. The process includes an application and may involve reference checks and an in-person travel skills assessment. Individuals who are unable to use Sun Tran services due to a disability will be approved for Sun Van.

Additional Information

ADA Paratransit Eligibility for Visitors

The City of Tucson ADA Eligibility Office ensures paratransit eligibility for visitors in Tucson, Pima County, and other jurisdictions, in accordance with ADA requirements.

Definition of a Visitor

A visitor is an individual with disabilities who does not reside in the area served by the local transit agency.

How to Qualify

To qualify for visitor eligibility, the visitor or their local transit agency must provide documentation confirming the individual’s ADA paratransit eligibility in their home city.

Required Documentation:

Proof of ADA eligibility from the visitor’s home state or city.

If a visitor lacks documentation of ADA paratransit eligibility, the ADA Eligibility Office may require:

  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of disability

For visitors with an apparent disability, no additional documentation is needed per 49 CFR § 37.127(d). For non-apparent disabilities (e.g., cognitive disabilities, cardiac conditions), documentation such as a letter from a medical professional or evidence of eligibility for other disability-based services may be required.

Alternative Documentation:

If the above documents are unavailable, the visitor may sign a statement verifying their disability and inability to:

  • Access a bus stop.
  • Navigate an accessible fixed-route bus (Sun Tran) in Tucson.

Duration of Eligibility

Visitor eligibility is valid for 21 days within any 365-day period. Visitors needing service beyond 21 days within the same year may be required to apply for local eligibility.

For more information about visitor eligibility in the Tucson Metropolitan area, contact the City of Tucson ADA Eligibility Office at (520) 791-5409, available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
